Does my SIM card work in Turkey?
Turkey is outside the European Union, so the EU's roam-like-at-home rules do not apply there. With the SIM card from home you pay what your carrier charges for Turkey. Check that rate before you travel, or turn off data roaming on your main SIM.
Turkish SIM card or eSIM?
- A Turkish SIM card — sold at the airport and in Turkcell, Vodafone and Türk Telekom shops, registered to your passport, and it goes into your phone instead of your own SIM. Your phone works with it for 120 days; after that it has to be registered in Turkey, for a fee (Resmî Gazete, 2021; Teknoblog, December 2025).
- An eSIM bought before the trip — you install it at home over Wi-Fi, and the plan starts only when it connects to a network in Turkey. Your own SIM and number stay in the phone. Each plan in the list above names its network: today Vodafone, and for the smallest plan Türk Telekom as well.
What you will use data for in Turkey
- Istanbul — call a taxi in the BiTaksi or Uber app, and let your maps work out routes and travel times across the city.
- Cappadocia and Pamukkale — balloon flights, valley walks and day trips are booked from your phone, even at the last minute.
- The coast — in Antalya, Alanya and Bodrum, all-inclusive Wi-Fi often reaches only the lobby; with your own data you are online at the beach and the pool too.
- Translation and WhatsApp — the camera translates Turkish menus and signs, and hotels, transfer drivers and tour agencies write to you on WhatsApp.
How much data to take
- 1 GB — maps, WhatsApp and email for a few days.
- 3–5 GB — a week or two with social media and photos.
- 10 GB or more — videos, video calls or remote work.
Getting the eSIM ready before you fly
- 1.Check that your phone supports eSIM — the phone check is in the site menu.
- 2.Choose a plan for Turkey and pay by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
- 3.The QR code appears in your account, usually within a few minutes of payment. Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi — step-by-step instructions.
- 4.When you arrive, choose the eSIM for mobile data and turn on data roaming for it. The plan starts when it first connects to a Turkish network.
Questions about mobile data in Turkey
Does the eSIM work everywhere in Turkey? In the cities and resorts — Istanbul, Antalya, Alanya, Bodrum — coverage is usually good. In the mountains and remote valleys it can be weaker, so save offline maps before a hike.
When should I buy the eSIM? Before you go, with data for the whole trip: according to the Turkish press, since July 2025 the websites of a number of eSIM sellers do not open on Turkish networks (DonanimHaber, 11 July 2025; Diken, 9 October 2025).
No connection after landing? Make sure the eSIM is the line for mobile data and has data roaming on, and restart the phone if it still shows no network. The instructions show the settings on each phone; after that, write to us from your account.
Staying longer than 90 days
A phone that, within any 120 days, uses Turkish networks on a foreign SIM for more than 90 days without voice calls can be cut off from them (Resmî Gazete No. 31401, 20 February 2021, as amended by No. 33298 of 2 July 2026). A trip shorter than 90 days stays within that. For a longer stay you need a Turkish SIM, and after 120 days your phone has to be registered too. We checked these rules on 26 October 2026.
Good to know
- The eSIM is for data only. You can call over WhatsApp, Messenger or Telegram.
- Your number stays on your main SIM, so calls and texts still reach you — at your carrier's roaming rates.
- Until you install the eSIM, you can get a full refund.
